VEHICLES FOR HIRE Law protects consumers

In June 2004, the City Council passed an ordinance requiring commercial vehicle-for-hire (all limousines, taxis and shuttles) to apply for a medallion in order to legally operate in Jacksonville.

The new order, under Chapter 220 of the Ordinance Code, includes fingerprinting of all owners and drivers, verification of commercial insurance meeting minimum guidelines, local and state background checks of owners and drivers, review of driving records and periodic vehicle inspections.

This ordinance helps protect consumer safety, as well as local security, when selecting a limousine, taxi or shuttle service.

It also assists the local vehicle-for-hire industry by creating a level playing field for those of us who take pride in managing a reputable business by adhering to local laws and policies set by the city.

At this time, there is minimal government regulation in regard to the ordinance. Therefore, enforcement of the order is limited to local owners and drivers.

I strongly encourage anyone who is considering using a vehicle for hire to check whether the vehicle is currently registered with the city and displays the blue medallion on the rear window of the vehicle.
